Essex County Beekeepers Society: Basic Beekeeping: 5-DAY VIRTUAL SHORT COURSE

“Basic Beekeeping” is a five day short course presented by the Essex County Beekeepers Society, a chapter of the NJ Beekeepers Association. The year 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of this class, and is the first time it will be taught virtually rather than at our usual venue at the Essex County Environmental Center in Roseland. The core curriculum will be offered on February 20, 21, and 27, 2021. The core curriculum is suitable for adults and children over the age of 12 who are new to beekeeping, as well as more experienced beekeepers seeking to refresh their knowledge. It provides all the basics you will need to get started in bees. A fourth class day, which will take place on February 28, 2021, includes bonus material not essential for beginners but providing answers to questions you will probably be asking a few months in. Tuition for the Core Curriculum is $80. The Bonus Class Day is an additional $20. Basic Beekeeping also includes a hands-on Field Day, which we hope to be able to conduct in person at area apiaries during a Saturday TBD (based on weather) in April. If health considerations prevent us from having an in-person Field Day, we will do Field Day virtually. All students will have access to Field Day virtual videos, regardless.

EAS Certified Master Beekeeper Landi Simone is the head instructor for this class. Landi owns Gooserock Farm in Montville and has been keeping bees for nearly a quarter century. She will be joined by long-time members of the ECBS teaching team Joe Treimel and Joe Lelinho, both highly experienced beekeepers, and by NJ State Apiarist Meghan McConnell. Students will be able to purchase both equipment and bees during class.
