SJBA Basics of Beekeeping

“Basics of Beekeeping” is presented by the South Jersey Beekeepers Association, a branch of the New Jersey Beekeepers Association. It occurs on 6 consecutive Saturdays beginning on October 2 nd . Class run from 9:00AM to 11:00AM and are held virtually via Zoom.

The core curriculum is suitable for adults and children over the age of 12 who are new to beekeeping. It provides all the basics you will need to get started in honey bees and qualifies for the education requirements for new beekeepers under NJ regulations.

The textbook “The Beekeeper’s Handbook” and other handouts are included in the registration fee of $125 per person.

Ned Morgan, SJBA Education Chair, is the lead instructor for this course. Ned is past president of SJBA and has been a beekeeper since 2006. Tim Schuler is the retired New Jersey state apiarist and is the owner of Schuler’s Honey.

    Oct. 2 Becoming a Beekeeper; Honey Bee Biology

    Oct. 9 Hive Components, Tools, Protective Gear, Getting Bees

    Oct. 16 Setting Up an Apiary, Feeding

    Oct. 23 Pests and Diseases of Honey Bees

    Oct. 30 1 st year and 2 nd year Management

    Nov. 6 Harvesting Honey

    A field day in 2022 will be scheduled for all students in the course.
